What is Ad Tracking?

Ad tracking is used for evaluating the effectiveness of an advertisement campaign. Ad campaign spending can be classified in mainly 3 categories -
  • CPM - Cost Per Million Impressions (usually 1,000 impressions).
  • CPC - Cost Per Click Campaigns (e.g. seach engine text ads).
  • Affiliate Ad Campaigns via affiliate partners.
CPM ads are paid per impression of the ad, CPC ads are paid when visitors clicks on the ads, whereas, affiliate ads are paid when a sale occurs. Therefore, CPC ads are more performance based as compared to CPM, whereas affiliate ads are more based on ad performance than CPC ads.

Therefore, rates for CPC should be usually higher than CPM ads, and affiliate ads are most expensive than CPC ads. However, to evaluate the effectiveness for each such ad campaign, they must be tracked.

Why is Ad Campaign Tracking Important ?

It is essential to evaluate the performance of each ad campaign. The CPM campaigns are tracked by number of clicks generated (click-through-rates), whereas CPC ads are tracked by conversions achieved. Now, CPM ads generate clicks and clicks generate conversions such as sales, sign-ups etc. The conversions are the ultimate goal of the ad campaign.

Therefore, the advertiser need to have the following information on those clicks:
  1. How many clicks were generated for each campaign?
  2. Where are they coming from (website, search engine and country of origin)?
  3. What was the keyword they searched on?
  4. How effective was the click?
  5. Are you getting the types of clicks you wanted?
  6. How many clicks converted to a sale or a sign-up?
  7. How can I optimize my CPC campaigns?
  8. What is the Return On Investement (ROI) for the campaign?
The effectiveness of a click requires tracking analysis worth a million dollar. Your ad budget should be monitored for its effectiveness. Are you getting any result from your CPC ad spending. WebsiteGear Click Tracking helps you monitor that for a small fraction of your ad budget.
